5 Common Mistakes When Burning Luxury Candles (and How to Avoid Them)

5 veelgemaakte fouten bij het branden van luxe kaarsen (en hoe je ze voorkomt)

Burning a luxury scented candle isn't something you just do. Proper care not only ensures a longer lifespan, but also a richer fragrance and safe use. Yet, small mistakes are often made that significantly reduce the quality of the candle—and the fragrance experience.

At Mari-Ve, we believe every candle moment deserves a touch of refinement. That's why we're sharing five common mistakes and how to easily avoid them.

1. Do not cut the fuse

One of the most common mistakes: using a wick that's too long. This causes a large flame, black smoke, and even soot buildup on the rim of the glass. In addition, the wax burns too quickly and unevenly.

Trim your wick back to about 0.5 cm before each use. This will help your candle burn more smoothly, cleanly, and evenly.

2. Burning the candle too short

If you extinguish a candle after a few minutes, the wax doesn't have enough time to melt completely. This causes tunneling: a deep hole in the center that makes it difficult to relight the candle.

Leave your candle burning for at least 2 to 3 hours each time it burns, so that the surface becomes completely liquid.

3. Burning too long

On the other hand, a candle can also burn too long. Burning for more than four hours causes the wax to overheat, resulting in an unstable flame and accelerated combustion.

Ideally, extinguish it after 3 to 4 hours: this way your candle will retain its scent and shape.

4. Blow out instead of extinguish

Blowing out a candle often creates smoke, an unpleasant odor, and wobbly residue in the wax. It's best to use a candle snuffer to elegantly extinguish the flame without creating smoke.

A properly extinguished candle remains more beautiful and fragrant.

5. Forgetting that a candle also requires maintenance

A scented candle is a product of craftsmanship and fragrance technology – and therefore requires careful attention. Think about keeping the rim clean, straightening the wick after burning, and regularly checking the burn time.

With small steps you can extend the life of your candle and ensure every fragrance experience remains optimal.

Give your candle the care it deserves

A Mari-Ve scented candle is made to be enjoyed—time and time again. By avoiding these five mistakes, you'll not only maintain the quality of your candle but also the sense of tranquility and luxury it brings to your home.

How to get the most out of your scented candle – 6 essential tips from Mari-Ve
How to get the most out of your scented candle – 6 essential tips from Mari-Ve Burning a scented candle seems simple, but do you truly want to enjoy a long-lasting fragrance experience without waste? Then there are a few key habits that will make all the difference. With these practical and luxurious tips from Mari-Ve, you'll ensure perfect combustion, optimal fragrance results, and sustainable candle care. Whether you're a seasoned candle enthusiast or have just lit your first luxurious soy wax candle, these are the essentials for burning your scented candle correctly. 1. Trim the candle wick before each use A common mistake is using a wick that's too long. Trim your wick to 0.5 cm before each use. This creates a smaller, more stable flame and prevents black soot, crackling noises, or smoke. A short wick not only makes your candle burn more evenly but also more evenly. Preferably use a wick trimmer. This makes maintenance just as precise as the candle itself. Our elegant candle trimmers ensure a perfect flame – stylish and functional. View our candle trimmers 2. Prevent tunneling: let your candle melt completely the first time Let your candle burn for at least 2 to 3 hours the first time. This will melt the entire surface, all the way to the edges, and prevent the common problem of tunneling, which creates a deep hole and leaves a lot of wax unused. This ensures even candle combustion and a maximum lifespan. 3. Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time Burning a scented candle for too long will overheat the wax, which can cause fragrance loss and wick distortion. Limit each burn to 3 to 4 hours. Then allow the candle to cool and the wax to harden again. 4. Use a candle snuffer for a neat finish Don't blow out your candle like you would a birthday candle – that creates smoke and residual odor. Use a candle snuffer or gently blow over the flame to extinguish it without creating smoke. This keeps your room fresh and your wick intact. 5. Ensure a draft-free location Place your candle on a stable, flat surface, away from windows, ventilation, or drafts. A flickering flame means the wax is melting unevenly, which affects both the fragrance distribution and the lifespan of your candle. 6. Refill your Mari-Ve candle holder – choose sustainable luxury Burned out your candle? Don't throw away your glass holder. At Mari-Ve, we believe in sustainable elegance: all our candle holders are refillable. Return your empty holder or order a refill in your favorite home fragrance. Waarom Fluweelzachte Pioenroos de signatuurgeur is van Mari-Ve
Why Velvety Peony is Mari-Ve's signature scent
Sometimes you encounter a scent that touches you. Not because she is overwhelming, but precisely because she carries something intimate and genuine within her. For us, that fragrance story is connected to one of the most meaningful moments in our lives: our wedding day. Velvety-soft peony wasn't chosen at random; it was born out of love. And you can feel it. Why this scent? A year ago, we stood at city hall, surrounded by family and friends. During the preparations, we wanted to choose a theme that resonated with us – soft, loving, and a little different. That's why I didn't immediately think of the classic rose, but of the peony: elegant, fresh and just a little bit more refined. Searching for the scent that could capture that feeling, we came across what would eventually become our Velvety Peony. A fragrance that you don't just smell, but experience – soft, round and with a touch of nostalgia. What makes this fragrance so unique? Instead of the typical floral scent, we opted for something more subtle. Velvety Peony is built up in layers that gently embrace you: Top note : fresh freesia Middle notes : peony, heliotrope, milk and a soft hint of caramel Base notes : musk, tonka bean and vanilla Fragrance profile: Floral • Musky • Gourmand It's like stepping into a room where someone has just carefully opened the curtains, letting in light, and a warm perfume greets you. No artificiality, just softness. A tip: how do you best let this fragrance come into its own? Velvety-soft peonies look best in places where you want to create warmth and ambiance. Think of: Living room, where you can relax or receive visitors Entrance hall – a subtle scent that welcomes you as soon as you open the door Place a diffuser in a draft-free corner or on an open cabinet. This way, the scent will spread gently and remain in the background. Why we stand behind this fragrance We'll be honest: we still smell this fragrance almost daily. Not because it's a bestseller, but because it breathes our own story. As a creator, it's tempting to move on to "the next fragrance," but some scents stay with you. They don't just tell a story—they remain a part of your life. We've never regretted our choice. And we notice that customers who discover this fragrance share that same feeling. Like finding something you didn't know you were looking for. Maybe this will give you an insight too Perhaps you use fragrance primarily 'because it smells nice'. But scent can be more. It can preserve a memory. Change your mood. Bring you back to what truly matters. Discover Velvety Peony This fragrance is found in our handmade candles, stylish diffusers, and refills.
