That's why we're sharing five common mistakes and how to easily avoid them. 1. Do not cut the fuse One of the most common mistakes: using a wick that's too long. This causes a large flame, black smoke, and even soot buildup on the rim of the glass. In addition, the wax burns too quickly and unevenly. Trim your wick back to about 0.5 cm before each use. This will help your candle burn more smoothly, cleanly, and evenly. 2. Burning the candle too short If you extinguish a candle after a few minutes, the wax doesn't have enough time to melt completely. This causes tunneling: a deep hole in the center that makes it difficult to relight the candle. Leave your candle burning for at least 2 to 3 hours each time it burns, so that the surface becomes completely liquid. 3. Burning too long On the other hand, a candle can also burn too long. Burning for more than four hours causes the wax to overheat, resulting in an unstable flame and accelerated combustion. Ideally, extinguish it after 3 to 4 hours: this way your candle will retain its scent and shape. 4. Blow out instead of extinguish Blowing out a candle often creates smoke, an unpleasant odor, and wobbly residue in the wax.
